Part B: A Theory of Kinetic Color (Home)

5. Chromatic Syntax

The art of retinal painting

"Chromatic syntax" involves principles of chromatic change that consciously invoke corresponding perceptual responses. The syntax of color change derives naturally from the experience of kinetic color.

The visual experience of colors and forms can be dramatic, mysterious, engaging, exciting, etc. With kinetic color, added qualities arise from stimulation of the neural mechanisms of sequential contrast and changing simultaneous contrast. The following points are intended to support a better understanding of kinetic color:

    a. Surround change

    b. Object change

    c. Hard and Soft Color Changes

    d. Parallel and Opposite Motion

    e. Speed of changes

    f. Penetration

    g. Dropout and Replacement
